Abby and I went to Utah for 9 days for my brother Mike's graduation from BYU. It was a lot of fun! We were very busy, but we had a good time. Here is our trip in pictures!

We had a great time seeing friends and family out in Utah. Thanks, Emma, for letting us stay at your house. I can't wait to see everyone again! And sorry to anyone who tried to call me while I was there... my phone didn't work most of the time. Thankfully Emma put Garrett in her "Fave 5" so that I could talk to him! Thanks, Emma!

Perfect Day

Last Saturday was a perfect day! I have pictures, but they are on my computer at home (I'm in UT), and I don't want to wait that long... so I'll post the pics when I get home in a week.

Anyway, last Saturday Abby slept in until around 8:45, so we got to sleep in a little until she woke up (I mean... we were up at 7 a.m. doing chores, mom and dad!). Then, Garrett made me breakfast! Egg and bacon mcmuffins - yum!

Then, we hung around the house for a bit in the morning, playing with Abby and doing a little cleaning and packing. When Abby woke up from her morning nap we took her to a friend's house, and then Garrett and I went strawberry picking at a berry farm! The weather was just perfect - it was in the high 60s and overcast, which was just great. The berries were huge and delicious (they were all-you-can-eat, too!). We brought home 3 gallons, but probably ate half a gallon just while we were in the field! I definitely want to go back again for more. We froze most of them because Garrett won't be able to eat them all himself!

Later that night, went downtown to a minor league baseball game! It was student appreciation night for the medical students, so for $10 per family, we got a buffet dinner, baseball hats with the team logo, and tickets to see the game! It was SO much fun. I love the atmosphere of baseball games, and the weather was still perfect. The game was exciting, too, although I'm not sure who won because we left a little early - it was getting late!

When we got home, we put Abby to bed and had some strawberry shortcake, using some of our fresh strawberries. It was delicious!

Flashback Friday - How We Met

Dating

The story of how Garrett and I met isn't really that amazing - it's a pretty generic BYU story, actually.

We met at the beginning of our sophomore years. Garrett had been home from his mission for about 5 days, and his mom had found him a place to live, which just happened to be in my apartment complex, so we were in the same ward. I wasn't really looking for someone to date because I was kind of hung up on another guy, and Garrett wasn't looking yet because he was newly returned from his mission, and still adjusting to normal life.

Near the beginning of the year, we had an FHE activity where we all played "Cranium". I don't remember this story at all, but Garrett does... apparently we were on separate teams but we were sitting next to each other. Garrett's team got a point or something, and they were all laughing and teasing us, I don't know. Anyway, he says that I laughed too, and smiled at him and teasingly said, "We'll have the last laugh, haha!" You know, saying that our team would win in the end. Anyway, he said that he thought I was being mean, so he avoided me a little bit for a few weeks after that. I don't remember this at all!!

After that, I don't really remember when I really started getting to know Garrett better, but we would talk at FHE, and I would ride in the car with him when we drove to activities. In November I bought two tickets to "World of Dance" in December, and asked him to go with me, which was our first official date. After that, we spent lots of time together, going up to SLC to see the lights on Temple Square, making gingerbread houses, studying in the library, and just hanging out.

The whole next semester, we spent all the time we could together. Eventually, we decided that we would get married, but it was just a matter of when. I knew I wanted to get married that summer, but Garrett wasn't as sure. I know, we had only been dating for several months, but I needed to know what our plan was! If we didn't get married over the summer, I wanted to do a study abroad in the Fall, so I needed to know!

In the end, we got engaged on May 27, 2004 while we were hiking at Mount Timp, and we set the wedding date for August 17. However, we found out that in MA you have to get your marriage license 3 days before you get married, and since we weren't planning to get there until the 15th or 16th, we had to change the wedding date to August 19.

We flew to Savannah for an open house, which was fun, and then flew up to NH for the wedding. We were married in the Boston Temple, which was perfect, and the reception was amazing!! We had the reception at Church, which was beautiful because we put in a false ceiling made of tulle and lights, so it didn't feel like a gym at all. There was dinner and dancing, and I think everyone had a great time. Garrett's extended family still tells me every time they see me what a beautiful reception it was and how much fun they had.

On our wedding night we drove to Manchester to a Bed & Breakfast by the airport, because our flight to UT was the next day. However, when we got there, the B&B was closed for renovations! Luckily, it was owned by a hotel next door, so we just stayed there. The next day, Friday, we flew home to UT, and got to Park City around midnight. On Saturday we spent the day going to Olympic Park and just walking around Park City, and then on Sunday morning we drove home to Provo to get things set up at home. So, we didn't really have a honeymoon - I would have loved to, but we didn't have any money, plus we were essentially losing money since I was missing work. But that's ok - we have our whole lives to go on fun trips - and we won't have to go into debt doing it.

So, that's our story. I feel so lucky to be married to Garrett! I love my life and I'm so proud of him, working hard in medical school.

Sorry I don't have more pictures... most of my pictures from us dating are on my old laptop, which crashed about 18 months ago and I still haven't gotten the data off it.

I feel bad that I didn't do a post for Molly's birthday (but here's a great one by Emma), or for Shauna's birthday, which have already passed this year, but I have to start somewhere, so I'll start now!

Top Ten Reasons Why I Love Emma

10. We are pretty much the same size, so I can wear all her clothes when I visit (FYI, Emma - I'm not packing any clothes when I come this week)

9. She spoils me a TON whenever I visit her. Someday I'll return the favor, I promise!

8. Her house is so nicely decorated, and she has really good taste. She's also creative and thrifty: even though she could afford to go out and buy a new stuffed chair, she decided to try to re-cover her old one instead.

7. She loves sushi as much as I do

6. She and John are so generous! I think everyone who knows them has probably benefited from their generosity in some way.

5. She is really smart. She was in the Top 10 of her H.S. class, and she was the Senior class president as well.

4. She has a nice voice - she made All-State Choir her junior year (we both tried out... I didn't get in though)

3. She is brave. She gave a talk in Stake Conference when she was Primary-age!

1. She is a GREAT mom! When Emma and I first got pregnant (we were only a week apart), I was really nervous about giving up my childless and somewhat carefree life, especially since I was only 22! I didn't tell Emma about my insecurities, but one day I was talking to her on the phone and she said, "I'm just ready to start thinking of someone else besides myself for a change." That really impressed me, especially since she is younger than I am! It motivated me to feel the same way.

Emma has always been a great sister and we have some great memories together. Hopefully someday we'll live closer together so we can make more memories!

Ikea!

Yesterday my friend Natalie's mom was flying in to visit, and Natalie invited me to come along to pick her up so that we could go to Ikea first! I have been wanting to go to Ikea for so long, because Abbie has tons of stuff from there, and she is always raving about it. I just had to see what all the fuss was about!

I love Ikea! However, there are two things I want to do differently next time: I want to have more time to spend there (by the time we got there we only had about 1.5 hours, which isn't enough time in a huge place like that!), and I would like to go back with NO KIDS. It's a pretty kid-friendly place, but not when they have been sitting in the car for over 2 hours, and they haven't had a nap, and they are hungry. Not a good mix.

I got some really cute things for Abby's bedroom (some curtains, finally, and some pictures for the walls, and some neat little storage bins that hang from the walls), and I got a lamp for my bedside table (using some of my birthday money). I really wanted to get a shelving unit for our books, but by the time we were walking through the furniture warehouse room, we were in a big hurry to leave (angry kids) so I didn't have a chance to go find it. Next time, I guess... I also want to eat in the cafeteria they have. The food looked great and it was really cheap!

And, there is an Ikea in Draper, and since I go to Utah on Sunday, maybe I can convince Emma to take me there during my visit. I won't be able to get the shelves, obviously, but there are some other things I didn't get yesterday because of certain circumstances (screaming and yelling kids).

Spring Break!

Last week Garrett was on spring break, so we spent a few days doing things around the house that have been neglected for too long, and then on Tuesday we went to Savannah to spend some time with Garrett's family.

We had a great time in Savannah! We really didn't do too much, but it was relaxing and fun to be able to just hang out and be together. We went shopping, worked on projects, played games, and ate great food.

On Friday night we got babysitters for the kids (Abby and Rylan, Garrett's 4-year-old brother) and we went out to an Asian Fusion & Sushi Bar with Garrett's parents and some other friends, Stephanie and Michael. The restaurant was really nice and it only had 11 tables plus the bar, so it was a good thing we had made reservations. And I wish we had brought our camera - the sushi was SO good and it looked as good as it tasted! We also got sampler appetizers, which Garrett especially loved. He said the pot stickers were as good as Taiwan's, which is really saying something. It was great to catch up with Stephanie and Michael - we usually try to go out and do something fun with them whenever we are in town.

We've also spent time doing projects. Garrett's parents bought some new living room furniture, so we put the old stuff on Craigslist for them, as well as some old lamps, a dog house, and other miscellaneous stuff they wanted to get rid of. I also helped Mom W. clean out some cabinets and redo some of the decor in the living room. I wish we could stay longer because there is more to do, but that's ok. There's always next time! I love taking on big projects, especially when they are in someone else's house.

We also got to play with Rylan a lot, which was so fun! We played baseball, and with toys, and with his playground outside. He was so sweet to Abby, sharing his toys, showing her how things work, and making sure she didn't put things in her mouth. It was very cute.

We probably could have stayed for Church in Savannah too, which would have been nice, but I didn't want to miss our ward because I won't be there for the next 3 weeks (I leave next Sunday for a 9-day trip to UT, and then the weekend after I get back Garrett and I will most likely be going to Virginia for a friend's graduation).

Anyway, spring break was great! It was so nice for Garrett to be able to relax. He takes the Boards in mid-June, so from now until then will be very stressful and busy for him.

Shauna, you are going to kill me.

We are in Savannah for spring break, and my mother-in-law, being the awesome mom that she is, offered to take me shopping for my birthday. I have always wanted a nice pair of jeans, so she suggested that we go to the mall and try on "Lucky" and "7" jeans. So we did - I tried on every pair of jeans they had. And I didn't like any of them. They were either too tight, too baggy, too low-rise (muffin top!), or I didn't like the wash. I never thought I was that picky, but I figured that since they are so expensive, I've got to love them. And none really jumped out at me. Anyway, the reason Shauna is going to kill me is because over Christmas break she was talking about how amazing these jeans are, and how she has always wanted a pair. Here I am, being offered a pair, and I can't even find some that I like.

Throughout the year I can always think of things I want to ask for, but when the offer is staring me in the face, I can't think of a thing. We walked through the mall and nothing came to mind. I'm so lame!!! I need to keep a list of things I want.

If these are my problems, I've got a pretty good life.

Flashback Friday - My Most Embarrassing Moment

In the summer of 2001, I had just started dating one of my good friends. For one of our first official dates, we decided to go putt-putt golfing at Hilltop Fun Center. I went to his house to pick him up and he and his dad were the only ones home, and they were sitting at the kitchen table talking. I sat and chatted with them for a while, but the conversation just kept going on and on and I wanted to leave for our date! So, since I had taken my shoes off, I started rubbing my foot on my boyfriend's foot (he was just wearing socks), and I hoped that he would get the hint that I wanted to leave. After about 5-10 seconds, I looked down and noticed that my boyfriend was wearing shoes! AND, both of his feet were under his chair. Mortified, I pulled my feet towards me as quickly as I could. His dad looked at me and smiled and said, teasingly: "Were you trying to play footsies with me, Hannah?" My face got SO red and I seriously wanted to run out of the hosue and hide forever. My boyfriend just got a confused look on his face and I quickly changed the subject. Just thinking back on this still makes me feel so embarrassed!

King of Country!!

On Saturday night by friend Abbie and I left our husbands at home (well, at Church watching the Priesthood session of Conference) and we went to a GEORGE STRAIT CONCERT!! It was SO much fun! I love live music, especially when it's an artist I am familiar with, so it was perfect. I have been listening to George Strait music since I was 5 years old, so this was especially neat for me to see him in person. George Strait has more #1 songs (55) than any other artist, EVER (in all genres). And honestly, seeing George Strait in concert has always been a dream of mine, but I really never thought it would be possible (not sure why).

The concert was amazing! He played many of my favorites (Check Yes or No, Write this Down, If It Wasn't For Texas, Heartland, Give it Away, I Saw God Today, Ocean Front Property, She'll Leave You With a Smile...just to name a few!). He sang tons of songs, but the time went by so quickly! He really puts on a great show. It was also especially fun because it was Abbie's first concert - now she wants to go to more (American Idol tour, anyone?). The only sad thing is that he didn't play my very favorite song (I Cross My Heart), but oh well.

Anyway, my apologies go to my sisters Emma and Molly. I know how much you girls wanted to be there! Next time, all three of us will go.

And thank you so much, Mom W., for getting me the tickets for my birthday. It was definitely an experience I'll never forget!

Flashback Friday - White Coat Ceremony

Garrett started medical school a year and a half ago, in the fall of 2006. It was such a fun time for us - we were living in a brand new place, I was pregnant, we were meeting lots of great people at Church, and we were just starting our Church callings (which we love!).

Medical schools have something for the freshmen that they call a "White Coat Ceremony" where - you guessed it - everyone receives their white doctors' coats! Well, they aren't real doctor's coats, because they are shorter than a real doctor's coat would be, but it was so neat! We had been hoping and praying to get into medical for what seemed like so long, and finally there he was, looking so handsome in a white coat with his name on it. For me, seeing Garrett in his white coat finally made it real for me that Garrett was going to actually become a doctor (a very happy and sad feeling at the same time. Happy because he'll save lives, but sad because being a doctor is very time-intensive).

The White Coat Ceremony was very nice. They had a few speeches, and then each person's name was called and they went to the front and someone put the coat on them. After the program there was a very nice reception with great food. It was especially nice because Garrett's parents were able to be there for it, which was great.

Groceries!!

If you live near a Kroger, now is the time to stock up on food storage!! They are having a great deal where if you buy 10 participating items (that are on sale already), you get another $5 off. I bought 30 of the items (there are TONS to choose from and they are mix & match, so you don't have to buy 10 of one thing) so I got $15 off automatically (after swiping my Kroger card). Then, I also had a $7 off coupon that I got in the mail (if I spent more than $35)!
The 7 oz Baby Goldfish came out to be 50 cents each! I was going to buy the regular sized Goldfish, but I noticed that they only have 6 oz in those packages, plus the smaller ones are better for Abby right now anyway. This deal ends tomorrow (Saturday).

All About Abby

At just over 14 months old, Abby babbles all the time, but only recently has she begun to say words we can actually understand. She doesn't say nearly as many words as Chris, but here's what she does say:

She also does sign language for "more", "milk", "eat", and "please". I have loved having her learn signs because she can tell us what she wants even though she can't say the words yet. When she was eating she used to whine and cry out whenever she was ready for another bite, and it was getting on our nerves! So we taught her to sign "more" when she was ready for a new bite, and that has made eating so much more pleasant. It took her longer to learn the signs than we thought it would, and we gave up trying to teach her around 9 or 10 months, but then around her birthday we started it up again and she has done so well.

She is also walking a lot more now. She loves to climb onto her rocking chair and sit in it for a minute, and then she shimmies off it and walks around the living room or into the kitchen. She can even stand up on her own in the middle of a room, without the help of furniture. In a few weeks she'll probably be walking like a pro!

Abby loves being outside. Sometimes we meet up with my friend and her kids at the park up the road, which is fun. We also have picnics in the backyard whenever it's nice outside. She also loves her teddy bear. She has a small 6-in Classic Winnie-the-Pooh stuffed animal, and she loves to give him hugs. It's so cute because when she hugs him, she puts him up on her shoulder and sways back and forth, and pats and rubs his back. Sometimes she'll even give him a kiss.

And last but not least, Abby has 8 (that's right, EIGHT) teeth! They're not all completely grown in yet, but they will be soon. She has three on top, four on the bottom and a molar coming in on the top, on the right side. I can't believe she's getting a molar!

So, that's Abby right now! I'm going to try to post something at the beginning of each month with her progression, mostly so that it can be recorded somewhere! It's so fun to see my baby growing up! (but it's also really sad!)

What Does That Say??

One of the many fond memories that Garrett has of his mission to Taiwan is of the English signs they have (like city signs, bumper stickers, billboards, etc). Their translation from Chinese to English isn't really the best, so he and his companion would often come across some pretty amusing signs. For example, on a billboard ad for perfume, it said "you touched my things and a smile came out like music." Or, on a scooter (not a bumper sticker, this was on the actual scooter) it said "we reach for the sky, neither does civilization".

Today I found an article on the LDS Newsroom website about how the mayor of Taichung has asked the LDS missionaries for help in improving their English signs, in hopes that Taiwan will become more inviting to tourists and international businesses. He recognized that many of the missionaries there are from North America, and are native English speakers, and offered to pay them for their service. Of course, they will help free of charge.

The article gives some good examples of some signs that need help:

At a Confucian temple: "Please keep orderliness solemnly silent." (Changed to "Please be silent and respectful.)

Or, at a baseball field: "Game that attention to flying out-of-bounds." (Pay attention to foul balls.)

When I told Garrett about what the missionaries are doing, he laughed but was kind of sad. "That's one of the things I loved about that place... it was so funny!!" I told him that it's too bad it didn't happen while he was there, because then maybe he could have taken an old sign when it was replaced - he would have loved that. Oh well...at least he has a few pictures of some signs with his other mission stuff.

Ok, I love a good discount... but how far would you go for a lifetime discount to your favorite store? I just read an article about students who were recently given a minimum of $500 to sit in a tattooists chair for 1 hour while the artist inked the permanent Apple logo into their skin! Here's the breakdown of payments:

$500 – Arm, leg, feet, torso (below t-shirt/short line)
$1000 – Arm, leg – always visible
$1500 – Hands
$2000 – Neck
$2500 – Head, unshaved
$3000 – Head, shaved
$5000 – Forehead or face

Everyone also gets a lifetime 25% off discount in all Apple stores. A press secretary for Apple said,“We foresee a day when thousands of people are walking around proudly displaying the Apple logo.” Let's hope not!
