Close-ups

Like I said in my blog post last week, I've been busy quilting lately!  Garrett and I took some pictures of my quilts over Christmas break.

This one is a favorite.  It's pretty big for a baby quilt -- it would be perfect for a toddler bed or even an adult lap quilt.  The patterns have a nautical theme to them, so I did triangles and simple straight line quilting.  I love this one!  The back is just solid white.

This one I really love, too!  When I was fabric shopping online over Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekend, I randomly came across this fabric bundle and added it to my cart on a whim.  It turns out that they are gorgeous in person and so nice and soft.  This quilt actually sold soon after I posted a picture of it on my Instagram account (I got a new IG account for my quilting projects - @riseandshinequilts .  I'm "listing" my quilts there first to try to avoid Etsy fees.)

This baby quilt was a custom order and it was really fun to make.  I love pinwheel quilts.

And THIS.... this is my baby!  Haha.  I started this last summer and was finally able to finish it after I bought my sewing machine.  The quilt pattern is called "Fireworks" by Camille Roskelley, and I actually used Camille's "Vintage Modern" line of fabric as well.  I love how it turned out!

It feels so fun to have found something I really enjoy doing - I feel like I found my passion!  I love trying new techniques and connecting with other quilters and I have a lot of big ideas for future quilts and projects.  I'm really excited!

Remembering 2011

Last year I did a post about 2010 and I thought it would fun to do another one for 2011!  I was reading back on the 2010 post and it was fun to remember some of the things we did that year, so I thought I'd continue the tradition (plus you know I'm a sucker for these types of things).

1. What did you do in 2011 that you'd never done before?
-bought a house!!  I'll admit, though.... owning a house totally stresses me out!  Sometimes I wish we had just rented, but renting a house like the one we are in would have been a lot more expensive per month.  This way, we are putting a chunk into savings each month.  That makes me feel better. :)  Almost done with our 6-month emergency fund!

2. Did you keep your New Year's resolutions?  Do you have new ones?
Well I had a resolution to be more organized at home, and I supposed I kind of am.  But this year I want to set more of a schedule (cleaning schedule, errands, library schedule, etc).  I also need to be a LOT better with the food storage blog.  I slacked lately, and I feel really bad about it.  I also need a resolution to get myself excited to have Abby in school this coming Fall.  I am seriously dreading it... I know I'm definitely going to be "that mom" who cries about her baby growing up too fast.  It's funny, I never thought I would be that mom.  I used to roll my eyes at that mom, so feel free to roll your eyes at me.  I would probably consider homeschooling (yes, I'm serious), but Abby is pretty darn excited about starting school so we've got to at least try it out.  And honestly, I think she will love it.  It will be fine, it will be fine, it will be fine.....

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
One of my friends here in Florida had a baby (okay, about a dozen friends at Church have had babies over the last 6 months). 

5. What countries did you visit?
No countries, and we actually didn't travel as much this year as we usually do.  We took a trip to Pennsylvania in April, but other than that we didn't go anywhere as a family.  Moving to Florida was a big trip though, and we've taken lots of little trips to Savannah.  I also took a trip to NH in March, and a trip to Utah in June for my sister's wedding!  So, I guess I traveled a bit on my own this year (which was AWESOME, I have a great husband!)

6. What dates from 2011 remain etched in your memory?
My trip to NH, and also my trip to Molly's wedding in Utah!  Moving to Florida and meeting so many great, awesome people has been so memorable too.

7. What would you like to have in 2012 that you lacked in 2011?
I think I would like to have more patience.  I have been in some situations lately that made me realize that I really struggle with this!  A lot!!  I would also like to be more scheduled.  Right now I just wake up each day and ask myself, what should we do today?  And then nothing gets done besides working out and emptying the dishwasher.  So I'd like to have a laundry schedule, shopping schedule, etc.  I'd also like to be better at meal planning and staying within my grocery budget (after I raise it a little bit.  I think it's unrealistically low).

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
I suppose buying a house (with a down payment that we saved really hard for!) is an achievement.  Moving on our own was also an achievement (we didn't have family help on either end).  I guess we are all grown up now. :)

9. What was your biggest failure?
I really can't think of anything specific.  Either I've succeeded at everything (ha), or I don't set high enough goals for myself (more likely).  Hmmm...

10.  Did you suffer illness or injury?
No, thankfully.  Besides getting strep on Christmas day!  But that's not a huge deal, thanks to free antibiotics from Publix.  Can't really complain about that (but man oh man, strep hurts!).

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Well, we bought a new TV on a Black Friday sale, and it's been pretty fun.  We got a TV when we first got married 7.5 years ago, and to be honest I would have been happy keeping that TV for another 7 years.  But, Garrett had been eyeing new ones for a while and we found a good deal (including a blu-ray player), so we jumped on it..  He never really wants anything, so I gave in and let him get this new "toy".  I have enjoyed it as well.  The HD is pretty amazing.  It's also a 3D TV, but we haven't watched any 3D movies on it yet.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
The kids did awesome with our move, so that was great.  I know some kids really struggle with big life events like that, but thankfully Abby and Ellie took it all in stride and I am so happy.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
No one's I am going to blog about!

14. Where did most of your money go?
House down payment.  Moving to FL also cost a pretty penny - especially when you count all the moving-in expenses like setting up utilities, registering cars, etc.

15. What did you get really, really excited about?
I was really, really excited when I found out that I'm going to have twin nephews.  I am STILL really, really excited about it - they are due to arrive pretty soon!!  I'm still a bit shocked too - twins are totally foreign to my family.

16.  What song (s) will always remind you of 2010?
One of Abby's favorite songs is "If I Die Young" by The Band Perry.  She knows a lot of the words and it's really cute to hear her sing along with the radio.  Sometimes we watch the music video on YouTube, which is fun because it's based on a scene from "Ann of Green Gables", one of my favorites.  Of course, any music from Tangled will remind me of this past year, too.  I still love watching the girls dance to it!

17.  Compared to last year, are you:

  a) happier or sadder?  Probably the same.

  b) thinner or bigger?  probably about 7 lbs thinner

  c) richer or poorer?  Hard to say.  We have more debt (since we bought the house, and that med school debt certainly isn't going away any time soon - in fact, the interest is accumulating).  But, Garrett is making a teeny bit more than last year (like, 1k more) so we are putting a little more in savings each month.  So, not really poorer, but definitely not richer.

 18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
I wish I had seen my family more.  I wish I had read more books.  I wish I had read more scriptures.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Less laziness.  Does that count?  Especially lately (last two months or so), I've been really lazy about making meals!  Leftover night is pretty common, but sadly we don't have a lot of leftovers to choose from (remember, not cooking.  Oops.).  So we eat hot dogs.  Sure, we love hot dogs... but let's face it, they aren't exactly balanced. 

20. How did you spend Christmas?
In Savannah, with the family.

21. Did you fall in love in 2011?
I will admit - I recently fell in love with Florida winters.... I am really loving this mild weather, I've decided!  We are outside so much, I love it.

22. What was your favorite TV show?
Hmmm.... I don't think I've watched any great new shows lately.  I still love the Biggest Loser.  I also love Modern Family.  Parks and Rec is pretty funny too.

23. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Nope!

24. What was the best book you read?
"Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand.  Read it!

25. What did you want and get?
An iPhone 4s!!!  It's fun.  Anyone have any apps they recommend?

26. What did you want and not get?
A big shelving unit for the big empty wall in our living room.  Maybe in 2012?

27. What was your favorite film of this year?
Movies are so bad nowadays!  I truly can't think of one movie I saw and liked, let alone one I would recommend.  Oh, except Tangled.  We love that movie.

28. What did you do on your birthday?
We were in Pennsylvania for my birthday, so I got to celebrate with my family!  It was great.  Emma and I got to celebrate together, just like the good old days.  Wish we could do that every year - birthdays are so much fun that way.

29. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Spending more time with my family! Selling more quilts, too. To be perfectly honest, I'm a little sad when I sell a quilt because I put so much work into them, but I think it would have been fun to sell more, because then I could use that money to buy more cute fabric and make more quilts.

30. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2011?
Hmm.... I wore a lot of cardigans with belts.  I love that look.  I also have fallen in love with cotton maxi dresses, ones that I could still wear if/when I get pregnant again.  Skirts/dresses are always a good option here in the summer, since it's way too hot to wear pants!

31. What kept you sane?
Quiet time.  Every day after lunch, without fail, we have quiet time.  Unless Garrett's on call and not coming home until late at night... if that happens, I don't do quiet time.  Instead, I put them to bed EARLY and have a long evening to myself. :)

32. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
I largely ignore the Hollywood scene, especially lately.  I used to get a kick out of reading the magazines/watching gossip-y shows but they really don't interest me at all anymore.  I can't even watch the awards shows anymore, they really irritate me.

33. What political issue stirred you the most?
Watching the Republican debates has been quite the experience and it's going to be an interesting year ahead.  I am about 90% sure who I will vote for, but I could still be swayed I think.

34. Who did you miss?
I miss so many people!  I miss Abbie! The Ranc's!  The Egberts! My sisters, and my brother and sister-in-law!  I miss my parents, too.

35. Who was the best person you met?
I have a pretty good friend here in Florida - she moved here for her husband's residency the same month we did, and will also be here 4 years.  She only lives about a mile away so that's fun.  Our kids are also the exact same ages.

36. Share a valuable life lesson you learned in 2011.
Enjoy life.  Tell people who you love that you love them.

It's been a while!

They say absence makes the heart grow fonder.... if that's true, you probably all love me by now!  I've been MIA for a good while now, but hopefully that won't happen again any time soon.

Life has been busy!  Thanksgiving was fabulous - I went with the kids to Savannah on Tuesday night, and had a great time with Garrett's family.  Garrett worked all week, then joined us on Friday night.  He also took Monday and Tuesday of the next week off, so he still had a nice little break despite working through the holiday.  On Saturday we had a girls' trip downtown to see the Nutcracker, which was fun.  I took Abby and we had a good time.  Afterwards we met up with all the husbands and kids and the 16 of us ate dinner at a restaurant down on River Street

Sunday was Church, of course, and on Monday we just hung out at the house.  On Tuesday I went shopping with my MIL and 2 sisters-in-law while the husbands stayed home with the kids (and racked up more hours playing Super Smash Brothers on the Wii).  We got home late Tuesday night and it's continued to be busy ever since!

Over the last week...... My friend and I did craft show on Friday and Saturday, we bought a Christmas tree and decorated it, we celebrated a friends' birthday, we went to the park, we watched BYU football, set up some giveaways on my food storage blog, caught up on Biggest Loser episodes, made a quilt top, sewed a throw pillow cover, ordered gifts online, took Abby to the doctor, made a big trip to Sam's club, went to play group, made 2 batches of bread, worked out a handful of times, and caught a mouse in the house (ugh).

So, we've been busy!  I feel a little guilty that I didn't post more about gratitude during the month of November - I really love Thanksgiving and all that it represents, but I just never got around to posting about it.

But, sure are enjoying the Christmas season.  The Pandora Christmas station is definitely a staple at our house, and the girls are starting to sing along to many of the more popular Christmas songs.  I made a Christmas-y smelling "brew" to simmer on the stove (cinnamon sticks, cranberries, orange peels, and cloves), and our Christmas tree gives off the perfect amount of that yummy Christmas tree smell.  We are loving it!!  Now if only we could have some snow...... maybe just for one day?  It's 78 degrees here... gorgeous, yes, but not exactly what I experienced growing up.

Christmas gifts, part 2

I originally made this quilt to give my mother-in-law for Christmas, but decided to have it be a birthday present since the kids usually all go in on the Christmas gift for their parents (her birthday is in January).

When my mother-in-law and I were in a fabric store together a few years ago, I asked her to show me some of her favorite fabrics so that I could get an idea of her style.  She pointed out a lot of pretty, bright Fall-ish colors.  Luckily, I already had a big stack of fat quarters in a similar style so I got to work.  I actually started this quilt a couple of years ago.  I wanted to do the whole thing in that triangle pattern, but eventually I gave up and just did a square border.  I was getting really tired of trying (and failing) to match corners.

I finished this quilt last July and almost forgot about it as we were packing for our Christmas trip.  So glad I remembered it since I hate shipping my projects... I'm always so scared they will get lost.

The backing is a vintage sheet that used to belong to my grandma.

I love how this quilt turned out and I hope my mother-in-law likes it!

Day 49 - Hopes, dreams, plans for the next 365 days

Okay, this might come as a shock to everyone, but I asked Garrett for his hopes/dreams/plans for the next 365 days and he participated and only rolled his eyes once.  It's a big day, people.

In 365:

Hannah's hopes: survive in this apartment for 8.5 more months, spend some more time with my parents before we move far away, get to my goal weight, take a few more fun "trips" around the area while we are here (we went to the Outer Banks last weekend and it was fun! I'd like to go to D.C. a few more times, too), finish our 72-hour kits, eat lots of sushi. And maybe some lobster, too.

Garrett's hopes: get a car that will last 6 years, catch a large redfish this weekend, get a decent call schedule for the months I have call (2 more!)

Hannah's dreams: buy a house when we move to Florida, get our 6-month emergency fund complete, sell a few quilts and other things on etsy, find the perfect bedding, learn how to play "All of Me" by Jon Schmidt (you can see him play this piano piece on youtube if you're interested.  If you haven't heard it, you should watch it, it's a great song. So far I'm just trying to perfect the first three pages...)

Garrett's dreams: "That one day... I will be judged by the content of my character." (har har, good one honey)

Hannah's plans:

This week: organize the LR closet

This weekend: friends from med school come to visit!

This month: buy a second car, finish Christmas gifts

November: Thanksgiving!!  No plans yet because we don't know if Garrett has time off.

Jan/Feb/Mar/April/May/June - my "baby" turns 4 (!!), take a trip down to FL to find a place to live, soak in all this extra time with Garrett during this intern year, I turn 27 (!!), move to Florida in June!

July - adjust to living in the heat and humidity again... although this time will probably be worse!  Why did we want to move to Florida, again??  I don't mind heat but I hate humidity, and I love fall!!

August/September - consider when to have another baby (can I handle three kids??)

Garrett's plans: go to work. fish as much as possible.

Christmas quilts

Last year I made quilts for Garrett's sisters for Christmas.  I love making quilts.  In fact, sometimes it's very hard to give them away - especially this year.  I loved them so much!  This year, I made quilts for my own side of the family.

I made this quilt for my brother's wife Shauna.  I decided to have lavender be my main color, because I remembered that she used to have a lavender bedspread so I knew she liked the color.  I accented it with mint green and gray.  I used the "Turning Twenty" pattern and added white sashing to make it bigger.  I love using white/cream fabric now because it really helps the patterned fabrics pop, plus you can make bigger quilts for less money.

I quilted all the quilts with just a simple vertical stripe.  My sewing machine isn't really equipped to allow me to do much else with quilts this size.

I love the back as much as I love the front!  It's a gray fabric with quarter-sized polka dots, with a strip of blocks down the middle.

I made this quilt for my sister Emma.  I just cut up a bunch of 2" strips and made log cabin blocks.  She wanted pinks, and I love the finished look!

I used the remainder of my polka dot fabric on the back, along with a pink fade-to-white fabric.  In the center are some leftover 2" strips from the front.

This is Molly's quilt. She wanted blue and white.  I wish I could have made all the pinwheels the same size, but I didn't have enough fabric!  I think it worked out okay, though.  Just don't look too closely... I am NOT a perfectionist, and I am horrible at matching up all those corners!!  I am just too eager to see the finished product that I don't always take the time to pin like I should.

She has a "solid" back (no stripe like Emma's and Shauna's), and I used a blue and teal binding to coordinate with both sides.

Mom wanted an Amish quilt.  Basically, this just means that I used black fabric instead of white, and that the colors are all solid, jewel tones.  This one was a monster to quilt on my little machine because I followed the zig zags.  My shoulders and arms were very sore by the end!

I used coordinating thread when I quilted it.  The black zig zags had black thread, and purple had purple, etc. On the back, each color showed up in the thread.

I don't have a picture of all four quilts because I had to get these three in the mail and my mom's wasn't quite done yet!  I am glad I started these in May.... two kids has been such an adjustment that I don't think I would have gotten them done if I'd started any later!

I wish I could make quilts for everyone I love, and if money was no object I would definitely try.  Merry Christmas, girls - I hope you find good use for these quilts!  I love you!

Christmas Gifts

I made most of the gifts I gave this year... Since we were with Garrett's family for Christmas this year, I made his sisters some quilts.

I started them in July, and they are hand quilted.  They were fun to make, but I'm looking forward to machine-quilting my next ones!

Busy Bees

We have been so busy lately, which is why I haven't updated our blog as often lately. I'll try to be better about it, though, because I really want to have a good record of our family happenings.

What's keeping me so busy? WELL.....

• I'm making ALL our Christmas gifts this year, so that's already consumed a LOT of time. I know, it seems way too early to be thinking about Christmas but making gifts takes a long time! I actually started working on them in July and it's been a lot of fun for me so far. And as much as I would LOVE to share my projects here, that's just going to have to wait, since they are for the family!
• Book club! We are reading The Secret Life of Bees, and I'm only about 65 pages in but I'm enjoying it.
• Friendship Quilt. I got together with some friends and we're making friendship quilts. All of us bought our own fabrics for a quilt, then we found 2 quilt squares that we wanted to make. Then, we gave pieces of our fabrics to each other, and we made the quilt squares we chose. It's been a lot of fun so far and I'm excited to see the final products.
• My food storage blog. This blog takes an incredible amount of time, but it's well worth it. Food storage is something I should be working on anyway, so Abbie and I figured we might as well help other people out while we were at it. It's made it much more enjoyable for us, and I really love doing the blog. We get about 250-300 hits a day, which is ok. We also have tons of new ideas all the time, which makes it exciting and interesting.
• Abby! Abby is learning her ABC's, and it's so cute to hear her sing them. I'll try to get a video posted. She also recognizes many letters (A, B, E, J, M, O, T, U, Y) and it's fun when she points them out on everything (books, signs, etc)
• Garrett and I repainted our bedroom yesterday. It's a gray/blue color and we love it - so soothing. I'll take pictures when our room is completely done, though... I have a few more projects in mind for the room.
• ASL. I signed for all of sacrament meeting yesterday, which was very intimidating but good experience for me. Still learning, though.
• I'm the Personal Progress Coordinator in our ward. Basically, I'm in charge of keeping track of the girls' personal progress, and I also plan one activity a month for all the girls, and we work on one of the values. This month we are focusing on Divine Nature, so we worked on DN experience #2 - I had a panel of mothers come in and talk about motherhood, and I also gave a short lesson and we reviewed Proverbs 30, and gave out some conference talks for them to review. In 2 weeks I'll follow up with them and see if they completed the requirements, and we'll sign them off!!

That's all I can think of for now! It's looking like a busy week ahead, but we're going to Savannah this weekend so we have something to look forward to!

When I was really little, I remember wanting a ring every year for Christmas/Birthday for probably 5 years... you know, just one of those cheap ones with a cheap little gem (the 25 cent kind). I never got one. But I also don't remember actually telling my parents I wanted one, so... that was probably my fault.
18. My favorite flowers are probably tulips.
19. I'm not colorblind, but I always get the colors yellow and orange mixed up. If they are next to each other I can tell the difference and say which is which, but if you showed me something by itself and asked me if it was yellow or orange, I would have to think about it for a minute.
20. I am scared to death of roaches. If I see one in the house (or anywhere, really) I scream and run away. I really don't like any bugs in the house, but especially roaches.
21. I still don't step on cracks.
22. I HATE pork & beans. I will not eat them, ever. When I was 5 or 6 years old we had them for dinner, and since none of us kids were really eating them, Dad turned it into a contest to see who could finish theirs the fastest. I ate them all and almost threw up (even back then I hated them)! Molly won, but only because Dad ate some of hers to help her. Anyway, pork & beans are probably the only food I will absolutely refuse to eat.
23. I like folding the laundry if it's still warm. Sometimes if I leave clothes in the dryer for a few hours, I'll turn it on again for 5 minutes to heat them up again before I fold them.
24. I LOVE to read! There aren't many things better than curling up with a good book.
25. I hate to drive at night, especially on unfamiliar roads. And in the rain! If it's nighttime and raining, I try to stay home!

Things I Want to Accomplish
81. Learn Photoshop - I'm pretty good now but I want to be really good at it.
82. Understand Isaiah - I took an Isaiah class at BYU and I completely understood it at the time, and it was amazing. I have forgotten a lot of it, but I have a great supplementary book on it now, and I want to keep studying it so that I can re-learn it and really know it.
83. I want to make quilts and be good at it. I just need to be better at working my sewing machine.
84. I want to be good at cake decorating. We just did a class on it in YW (Tues. nights) and it was so fun!
85. I want to write living histories of my family.
86. Scan all important family photos so they can be preserved and shared with everyone.
87. Be able to play every hymn on the organ (I can do many of them, but some are pretty challenging for me still)
88. I want to read each latter-day prophet's biography (I know you have them all, Mom and Dad!)
89. I would like to serve a mission with Garrett someday.
90. I would love to get my Master's Degree in Human Resources, or maybe Social Work. There will be plenty to time for that someday!

What I would do with $100
91. buy some clothes or other fun things from Target
92. get some picture frames or art for our bedroom
93. buy some fabric to make a quilt
94. buy some other materials for other projects I want to do
95. donate it to Church
96. buy a tall bookshelf to replace the short one that's overflowing with books
97. buy a forward-facing carseat for Abby (she's still too light for one, that's why we don't have one yet)
98. go out for a nice dinner
99. buy groceries
100. fill up the cars with gas
